Bryan Metzdorf designed Before and Not Yet entirely on-site as part of his residency at Springville Center for the Arts: a multi week program organized in collaboration with the AKG’s Public Art Initiative during which he held daily studio hours, explored the Springville area, and worked with local K-12 students through SCA and Springville-Griffith Institute. As the artist explained: I borrowed from the existing architectural language and colors of Main Street. Working in this way allowed me to insert something new while ensuring some cohesiveness with the surroundings. Small details about my arrival and immediate impression of the area were abstracted and recombined to form a composition that speaks both to the place as well as my initial experience. My hope is that as the people of Springville view this on a daily basis, they will start to recognize some of these elements as their own, and the mural will then begin to be experienced as part of the architectural whole of the downtown area.
